Teeth grinding, as the name suggests, is the condition in which an individual grinds his or her teeth during sleep. There is not one specific cause why this may take place, however, the most commonly known is that of stress.
In case the teeth are not aligned properly, teeth grinding is likely to take place as one may unconsciously grind or rub them together while asleep. It is always a sensible idea to have it checked by a dentist, before this leads to further problems that may be more serious in nature.
Other problems that may take place due to teeth grinding would be its effects on the teeth, jaw, mouth and face. In some cases, people may lose a few teeth, or break them.
The reasons for the onset of teeth grinding may vary from person to person. The following are the ones that most commonly lead to it:
One of the major and most talked about causes of teeth grinding is stress. Many psychologists say that stress usually leads to disturbed patterns of sleep. This may cause teeth grinding, as the person may feel unpleasant and anxious while sleeping. However, he or she may not be aware of doing so.
Next is the anger and aggressiveness factor. If a person has pent up anger and has not been talking about it for too long, he or she may manifest suppressed anger through sleep by clenching teeth and grinding them together – exactly how people usually express anger while they are awake.
This also happens in children and mostly during the period when they are growing new teeth. The growth of new teeth usually accompanies unpleasantness in the mouth and jaw. In order to get relief from the undesirable feelings in the mouth, children may resort to teeth grinding.
